THE NEXT DAY I RAN INTO HIM, out of uniform, at the grocery store. He was wearing a white buttoned shirt and brown dress shoes that seemed newish. He was ahead of me at the checkout, buying spaghetti sauce and Cheerios. When he saw me, his eyes lit up and he plucked something out of the magazine rack, holding it to his chest.

Afternoon, he said. He looked both earnest and a little amused. Maybe I can start making amends to you and your sister, he said. He offered me the comic book he’d just grabbed. It was a Little Archie, a new one.

Oh geez, I said, blowing my nose. I took it from him. These ones are really terrible. I flipped it open. Miniature versions of the characters, caught up in the same rivalries and passions they would re-enact as teenagers, ad nauseum. A pretty pessimistic take on personal growth. Lisa’s enthusiasm for the comic had always seemed strange, though she claimed to get a kick out of its old-fashioned worldview—where the worst thing that could happen to you was showing up at the sock hop in the same dress as somebody else.

I’m sorry I upset you yesterday, Daniel said, noting my red-rimmed eyes. I hope I can convince you to forgive me.

It’s not you, I said. I’m not normally a basketcase. It’s my sister. She’s gone missing.

He wouldn’t bother telling this story, risk distressing me by bringing it up, except that people always ask. When you’ve got two people like me and Daniel, what we do and what we’re like, people always want to know how we got together. And though Daniel can stretch the truth for what he thinks is a higher purpose, he’s a terrible liar in general. So he sticks to the facts, more or less.

When he tells it, though, the box full of comics is mine.
